Description

Fall to low on it and you will gain negative end game point and not be welcome to help build the cathedral, but you will be able to pay less tax. It didn’t have to be so – it’s not something due to game design but rather skimping out on supporting materials for players.

When the owner places a worker at the Wonder’s location, that worker either counts as two workers or they gain one Influence, the owner’s choice. On a player’s turn, a player must place one of his workers from his player mat onto a location on the board, and then he must execute the action associated with that location. This unusual blend of mechanics makes it an ideal gateway into worker placement Eurogames, or a great game in its own right when you’re not looking for something too heavy or lengthy. It involves placing “one or more pawns on a play surface to claim the right to do a specific action. The crux of a turn in Architects sees you place one of your workers onto the board at one of the locations. Well, to craft both new options, you need to stack a worker on top of a worker that is already in the guildhall, as well as pay 5 Silver for the adornment.

Be too disingenuous and you will be refused access to building the cathedral, while too much piety will leave you unable to access the resources of the Black Market. I have gone pretty deep into these games, backing a lot of the most recent releases, looking at the expansions and Collectors edition boxes to keep it all in, with the colourful Folded Space inserts to boot. As with almost every space on the board, the more workers they have assigned there the more effective the action becomes.

Every board game has a sweet spot - the ideal number of players - and in my opinion Architects’ is four (not counting solo or cooperative play). You drop your guy, claim your stuff/perform your action and that’s it, your turn is over and the game moves on. If there are only two players, they tend to mostly ignore each other or hound each other so closely that nobody can accomplish much.

Also remember that if you are not virtuous enough, you can’t help build the Cathedral… because you wouldn’t be the sort of person found in a church anyways. It was also at this point that I started gaming the game, so to speak – or rather, I saw a loophole I could exploit. That by itself is a fascinating mechanism that effectively decouples your instincts from your best interests. Artisans does add some help to the AI in that they now will get points when adding workers to the guildhall.
