Songs like “Mezmerised” and “Sorrows of the Moon” pulled in the trippy feel of classic rock and wound them into at-the-time modern metal numbers. Following the usual annual / bi-annual release schedule of bands back in the day, Into The Pandemonium didn’t give the band a huge amount of time to evolve yet they did still manage to tweak things a bit. Warrior’s presentation a mix of rough, solid, power and attitude a good blend that suits the music perfectly.

Refusing ever to do what was expected or demanded, the band constantly changed musical direction, always brought in surprising influences, and kept people guessing as to where they might venture next. That they did so in the face of adversity at almost every turn makes this story even more incredible. One ingrained narrative of the modernist 1980s is that music slumped midway through the decade, with all of the creative verve that powered post punk sedated until acid house culture livened things up once again. That the teenagers who recorded “The Third Of The Storm” and “Triumph Of Death” for the HELLHAMMER EP would, despite constant turmoil, be recording the jaw-dropping “Rex Irae” just three years later is astonishing.

Looking back, it’s tempting to see the Hellhammer of Spring 1984 as dogs who have just had their first beating. Dawn Of Megiddo’ is a wonderful example of how the band’s meticulous battle campaign was being realised as an integrated whole as opposed to extreme metal with some odd stuff bolted on, with the addition of timpani played by American drummer Reed St. One of the first bands to follow in the rupturing aftermath of Venom’s first single and two albums, was Swiss metal group Celtic Frost. A "Danse Macabre" woven patch, a double-sided poster, and a Necromaniac Union fan club enamel badge complete the set. Ahead of the release of an era-spanning box set for extreme metal ground-breakers Celtic Frost, famed frontman Tom G.

The closing section of ‘Tears In A Prophet’s Dream’, which lands somewhere between early Tangerine Dream and Nurse With Wound, and ‘Necromantical Screams’, with it’s chamber metal take on what was just starting to bubble over Stateside with Metallica and Slayer, finally show Celtic Frost are truly where they wanted to be, at the world vanguard of modern metal. On the other hand, there’s things about Hellhammer that are also extremely pleasant and that reflected a totally magical time, full of honesty and ambition and a close knit circle of friends as a student of early Celtic Frost.
