I also appreciate Conner's deep connection to his Christian faith, however it's not something I personally relate to and could see it being distracting to other readers (note that this is NOT to say Conner should not have included it, since it's his truth and is so important to him). But he had no character, no personality and not a lot to do other than sit around with his legs broken.

I kept reading though and my whole attitude about the book changed and at the end I was crying over the wonderful outlook and sincerity of James Conner.

ACC Player of the Year and star Pittsburgh Steelers running back James Conner recounts his devastating struggle with cancer, revealing the lessons he drew from his miraculous recovery and his extraordinary comeback. James is a brave faithful young man and has endured so much in his short life and still comes out super positive and full of love for his Faith, his Family and most of all what he loves to do and that is play football! Growing up in a working class family in Erie, Pennsylvania he worked hard to earn a football scholarship at the University of Pittsburgh. My goodness, if more people had a tiny fraction of the faith, work ethic, and positivity that James Connor has, the world would be a much better place. In reality, fear is something that exists in the mind of those who tend to live a life under pressure without understanding the fact that whatever they are believing is not the same.

No matter how much we doubt ourselves, deep down inside we know we have what it takes to accomplish great things – and live awesome lives. We can choose to live in that invisible force of fear or we can choose a different story line, one of hope, possibility and connection. During rehab, James’s health continued to inexplicably deteriorate until a chest X-ray and biopsy confirmed the unthinkable: a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. This experiment takes the stand in proving that fear can be installed externally to a human being based on the methodology of stimulus generalization . It can take me a while to feel like myself around new people, and I often find it hard to connect with people during brief encounters at parties.

Fear sets in, we are prone to have fear, to be scared of the outcomes, to be scared of walking on a stage, to be scared of doing something new, scared of rejection, scared of being not good enough, fear of not reaching our goals… Fear is a real thing. There are even numerous realistic examples of what is perceived as superstitious fear for instance do not walk under the ladder or a black cat crossing one’s path, etc. One story that illustrates his work ethic was during a chemotherapy session, he was studying other college running backs by watching video on his phone while the drugs dripped in the bags. The former do exist in the same state of the body and where the excitement is the reaction of the brain. In a world of non-stop action and reaction, simply taking that moment is often the most difficult but also the most important step we can take.

Choosing connection enables us to recognize the fears of our times but to live with the vitality of change and grow a new sense of relationship. Each tribe has developed their superstitions to get rewarded after performing acts to avoid the fearful consequences upon which they have no control because religion is something that people find comforting. So I force myself to understand that any obstacle preventing me from completing a task is an “Excuse”. The Five Conversations include: Managing Meaning, Managing Attitudes, Managing Dissent, Managing Emotional Well Being, and Managing Intellectual Stimulation.Fear of snakes is not helpful to me as I am unlikely to be harmed by one in the UK and don’t need to react so violently when I see one on TV. Released against the background of unrest and fear in our country, this is a healing autobiography from a biracial author that reminds us that the daily effort we put into our character and the way we support each other is the most important thing of all. My biggest complaint was that it got to be repetitive and since I’m not the kind of person who enjoys motivational speakers, I got a bit bored.
