While this sort of style works for some people, it's not something I personally resonate with — for the expansive YA genre, I've enjoyed other types of writing more. I’m the luckiest person ever for the chance to have buddy read this with one my favorite people Cara! This book does the academic rivals dynamic so perfectly that within 50 pages I was yelling "PLEASE KISS!

I DIDN’T KNOW I NEEDED THIS BOOK AND NOW I LEGIT HAVE NO CLUE HOW I SURVIVED BEFORE I READ IF YOU COULD SEE THE SUN. I like how Henry always viewed their rivalry as friendly while Alice saw it as much more serious, because she had so much more at stake with winning. Alice is a really realistic main character, and I relate to her with all of the worrying about your academics and all of that, and I love that she wasn't perfect, which makes her incredibly relatable. i’m so used to seeing the side of henry that laughs aloud, that teases me and challenges me and listens to taylor swift on repeat that i keep forgetting how distant he is with everyone else, even people he knows. i also went in thinking this was going to be focused solely on the romance, but the slow burn is the longest slow burn i have ever read i might be exaggerating.I especially love that part about how The American Dream doesn’t necessarily have to happen in the US; Alice sounds like a character easy to root for! I’ve spent my whole life longing to be seen, but I’ve come to realize that when people look too closely, they inevitably notice the ugly parts too, like how the tiny cracks on a polished vase only become noticeable under scrutiny.

you think that just because you're all smart and wealthy and attractive you can just do whatever the hell you want-" "wait.

her relationship with her parents made me emotional at some points, i related to her so much, she wants so much for herself and her family but just can't get it.

Following the ceremony she literally falls into a situation that triggers the power to make her invisible. Also some of the not so minor "crimes/situations" were brushed aside when they were actually pretty serious issues (see the tw at the end of the review). frustration grows as the semester ends, worsened by an award ceremony and encounters with her nemesis, henry. I sympathize with her desperation to earn enough money to stay in school, and I agree that any penalties should be meted out fairly. it was barely even a kiss they had in the end lmao but the way everything came together was chef’s kiss.

alice sun + henry li my babiess 💌💌 them being accomplices to a literal crime but it's ok because they're top students is so 😭 but it's ok i love them and i stand by everything that they did. I liked the setting, the morally grey heroine (blackmailing your fellow students for fun and profit?
