It’s also the job of each League’s Grimnyr to interface with its Votann Ancestor Core using arcane technology. The set includes a control dice featuring swerve, jackknife and roll results, four damage dice featuring glancing hit, penetrating hit, and catastrophic hit results, and three location dice featuring engine, crew, body, and drive results. If you need a refresher on what the Leagues of Votann are up against on the battlefields of the 41st millennium, check out our guide to all the Warhammer 40k factions – or zoom in further with focused guides to the other Xenos races, the Imperium of Man, and the Warhammer 40k Chaos forces. There are also a couple of alternate weapons, heads, and even different shoulder/backpack banner things, so you’re not limited in how you can customise this little guy. This set is also your first chance to get Codex: Leagues of Votann, a 104-page book that’s packed with lore and rules for this all-new army.

We'll dive into each of the units included in the Army Set in the next section, but I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of their rules that really stand out. Hardy, independent, and avaricious asteroid miners armed with some of the best guns, armour, and technology in the game, these space dwarfs are not messing around. Because of this, they are perhaps the most likely race in all of Warhammer 40K to ally with other amiable races like humans or T'au, and are more likely to work as mercenaries than most in the 40K world. This includes Ion weaponry, a technology they generously gave to the Warhammer 40k Tau Empire, and even artificial intelligence. Newly promoted to lead the Ultramarines’ fourth company, Ventris is sent to the planet Pavonis to repel Drukhari raiders.Doubly so if you’re wanting to play the “default” option for the Greater Thurian League because Uthar the Destined is the one (and only) unique character in the army (so far). Each page harbours a host of painting inspiration, and the book is well-formatted enough to make all the gaming deets clear and accessible.

To us, it seems most likely that these figures will retail in boxes on 10 when they are eventually released – after all, most Warhammer 40,000 troop units tend to clock in around that kind of number. There is also the slightly dialled-back design of the bikes, though this is a far smaller criticism. If you lose a battle there is a cost, after rolling for resources you roll a further D6 (like you do for rare resources) and on the roll of a 1, one randomly selected kindred asset on your sheet stops working and its effects cannot be used again until you pay the cost in resources that are required. This will be your first opportunity to get everything in the box but don’t worry, as the miniatures and regular versions of the codex and datacards will all be available separately soon. It’s been a long wait, but you’ll soon be able to get your hands on the newest faction for Warhammer 40,000 . The same concept is channelled into the Hernkyn Pioneers: these guys are all equipped in big coats that act in a similar manner – billowing out behind them as the vehicle pushes forwards. They also come with powerful ranged weapons, grenades, and can move 12" before the start of the first turn.

These folks are very good evidence for the idea Warhammer 40k is all about mean looks and big shoulders. But that just means when these Army Sets do arrive you’ll have a couple weeks to work on getting them built and ready for the tabletop! In today’s review, we take a look at the contents of the brand new Leagues of Votann army set, especially the miniatures and all the build and weapon options.

There is a full set of Crusade rules for narrative campaigns and a name generator with male and female names for your Kin (Something I am happy about as my naming skills are poor).
